Hearing aids are divided into different categories. Choosing the right hearing aid depends on the level of hearing loss and personal wearing preferences.
The most commonly used hearing aids are classified as follows:
- Completely-in-the-canal hearing aid (CIC)
- In-the-canal hearing aid (ITC)
- In-the-ear hearing aid (ITE)

Behind-the-ear hearing aid (BTE)
Completely-in-the-canal (CIC) hearing aid
These are the smallest hearing aids available and are almost invisible. They are suitable only for individuals with enough space in their ear canal.
Due to their very small size, the technology does not allow for powerful sound amplification, so they are recommended for people with mild hearing loss. Additionally, their batteries do not last long and require frequent recharging.
In-the-canal (ITC) hearing aid
These are slightly larger than completely-in-the-canal devices but still barely visible. They are suitable for individuals with mild to moderate hearing loss. Being lightweight and placed almost entirely in the ear, they are comfortable to wear, stylish, and suitable for people who engage in sports activities.
In-the-ear (ITE) hearing aid
In-the-ear hearing aids are larger because they include a bigger receiver and battery. At the same time, they provide stronger sound amplification and longer battery life. Compared to in-the-canal models, in-the-ear hearing aids are easier to use and more affordable.
Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid
The components of these hearing aids are housed in a small case placed behind the ear. These devices offer the strongest sound amplification, making them suitable for individuals with severe hearing loss. Even though they are worn outside the ear, they are not very visible. Also, if these are battery-powered devices, they tend to have longer operating time due to their larger battery size.
