How to get an audiogram done by yourself, at home?
If you want to test your hearing by yourself at home, there are now simple methods using a modern smartphone. Numerous applications offer the possibility to create an audiogram based on which you can evaluate your hearing status and determine if you need a hearing aid. Audiograms made with such devices do not reach the accuracy level of those performed with professional equipment but can be an alternative for those who cannot travel to an audiology clinic.
At HiSound we have tested several hearing test applications and recommend the following:
Hearing test, Live Audiogram - for Android phones
Hearing Test & Ear Age Test - for iOS (iPhone)
A few things you need to keep in mind:
- the applications require installation and configuration; if you don't have technical skills, ask someone (a younger person) to help you
- a good quality pair of headphones for the phone is necessary; over-the-ear headphones are recommended, not in-ear ones
- the hearing test must be performed in a sound-free environment, for example, an isolated room
The test takes approximately 5-7 minutes. After completing the test, you will have the audiograms displayed for each ear separately. The results are interpreted as follows:
- up to 25 dB - normal hearing
- between 25 - 40 dB - mild hearing loss
- between 40 - 70 dB - moderate hearing loss
- over 70 dB - severe hearing loss
If you fall within the limits indicating hearing loss, we first recommend consulting an ENT specialist. Hearing impairment can have many causes, and some of them can be treated medically.
Note: Testing hearing with a smartphone application is not a certified method and is not intended to replace a professional audiogram performed in an audiology center. The information presented in this article is for informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice.
