Differences between analog and digital hearing aids

  • Differences between analog and digital hearing aids

Although it may be difficult to distinguish between an analog hearing aid and a digital hearing aid based on appearance alone, there are significant differences between the two.

1. Automatic Gain Adjustment
Analog hearing aids use a linear amplification circuit and can only amplify sound uniformly. Digital hearing aids use a nonlinear amplification circuit and can automatically analyze environmental sounds. They adjust the level of amplification based on the user's comfort, avoiding situations where soft sounds are inaudible and loud sounds become unpleasant.

2. Speech Intelligibility in Noisy Environments
In noisy environments, most digital hearing aids can automatically identify and compress fixed-frequency noise, while enhancing speech frequencies. This significantly improves speech intelligibility.

3. Compensation Curve Programming
Digital hearing aids can automatically program different compensation curves according to the user's specific hearing loss and sound sensitivity, providing more personalized and accurate hearing support.

4. Frequency Band Amplification and Multi-Program Control
Digital hearing aids use frequency division technology. The application of multi-band processing ensures both accuracy and comfort in hearing compensation.
They can be configured with different listening programs based on the user’s environment—such as quiet settings, noisy settings, musical environments, or telecoil (induction) settings.

5. Automatic Volume Control
Digital hearing aids equipped with microcomputer chip technology can automatically adjust hearing compensation. This reduces the need for manual volume control, enhances user comfort, and minimizes the risk of mechanical failure over time.

Conclusion
Digital hearing aids are generally a more modern and effective option, making them the number one choice in audiology clinics.
